Kids characters are shaped in the playground, not the classroom

And employee characters, and company culture, and all the unwritten rules of the organization are shaped in the cafeteria, the corridors, the smoking areas, the car park, the water-cooler corners, the elevators, the reception, the workstations, the work floor and the toilets.  And even the carpool, car-sharing system.

Hardly places where leadership development, change management, new manager programmes, lean training or health and safety workshops take place. At least, not the last time I checked.

Houston, we have a problem!

We spend 75% or more of the efforts and money in the formal structures, but 75% or more of the shaping of company life takes place elsewhere.
