The company culture is its operating system. As such, we need to take care of it, keep it healthy, clean it up and have the appropriate upgrades. The IT/software analogy is not entirely inappropriate.

Operating systems see upgrades from time to time. Upgrades are usually done to improve performance or get rid of bugs. Upgrades don’t mean scrapping the operating system, throwing the baby with the bath water.

The organizational culture/operating system needs similar treatment. It’s not jus tweaking, it’s a more sophisticated and able system what the ‘upgrade’ may bring.

Leaders should be aware of the fitness of their ‘operating system’ and have a clear idea of its ‘upgrading possibilities’.

As in the IT/software upgrade, sometimes the changes seem painful. People are used to the previous version. Actually, people (me, and my Macs…) wait to upgrade until the noise of problems goes down. People in organizations do the same. They ‘wait to upgrade’ to see if change sticks.

And if all fails, you can always reboot.
